Katarina Witt first began to skate as early as age five years old. The talent she displayed soon became apparent, and she gained entry to a private school that caters that caters to children who have a passion for sport in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Coach Jutta was also there. Witt achieved her breakthrough in the second position she placed in the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. The grace and elegant style of Witt caught the eye of the world and she's dominated her sport ever since. Olympic success Katarina Wit took home gold in ice skating for women during the Sarajevo Winter Games 1984 after a highly competitive and intense contest. The victory she won four years earlier was even closer. Free skaters lost however, she took home the gold medal in the mandatory figures and her short programme. Witt is the only female figure skater to win the same event twice in the same year since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt, who was a star in the film industry as an actor, returned to figure skating in 1994 to compete in the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. Though she did not take home a medal, the young woman impressed her spectators despite finishing seventh. Witt's entry into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame occurred in the year 1995.
